Kacey Musgraves' Saturn Has Returned

Following the devastation of her 2021 album star-crossed, Kacey Musgraves is back with an introspective yet impactful new single entitled "Deeper Well" from her upcoming 4th studio album of the same name. On this ethereal new single, Musgraves goes back to her country roots and incorporates the traditional sounds that can be found from her past albums such as 2018's Golden Hour. However, "Deeper Well" doesn't just re-visit this past country sound but elevates it to be something more - a sound of pure relaxation, reflection and natural ambiance that is rarely heard in the pop scene these days. Instead of continuing the louder sounds from star-crossed, Musgraves retreats into what appears to be nature and all-things beautiful and combines that nurturing and relaxing sounds with the twangy country beats that made her famous. It truly is an innovative sound that is not done often due to the sheer difficulty of pulling it off correctly. But, Musgraves does this excellently.

It is also important to recognize that this is Musgraves' most vulnerable and personal single she has put out yet. "Deeper Well" almost feels like reading her journal because of the lyricism and poetry that is effortlessly conveyed in the flowing rhythm. With lines such as "I'm sayin' goodbye to the people that I feel are real good at wasting' my time" and "It's natural when things lose their shine so other things can grow," it is clear that we are hearing Musgraves' own reflection on her career, emotions and life. The gorgeous and poetic production certainly matches the lyrics so well to where this song just relaxes you even on the first listen. It is just pure serenity and calmness that will make you feel as if you are in the beautiful scenes that Musgraves explored to create this album.

It also cannot be ignored that Musgraves lays down some of her best vocal work we have seen in her career. While she has proven time-and-time again that she is a top-notch vocalist, "Deeper Well" takes things even further by emphasizing the control and unique tone of Musgraves' angelic voice. It sounds as if she is humming to us or just singing a bedtime story to help us calmly float down the river of her emotions. Everything about this track is just pure poetry. There are very few artists who would choose to retreat back into a niche sound after winning Album Of The Year and making a huge grandiose album. And there are even fewer who would elevate that niche sound to be something more and transformative. And Musgraves is certainly in that few.

We'll all be counting down the days until March 15th when we can finally listen to the highly-anticipated and long-awaited Deeper Well.
